JOB DESCRIPTION

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Specialist

 Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process by which children and adults develop fundamental emotional and social competencies and experiences to:

  • Understand and manage emotions
  • Set and achieve positive goals
  • Feel and show empathy
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships
  • Make responsible decisions

SEL builds and deepens a positive climate and culture in school and in Out-of-school time programs. Our work has its foundation in the Weikart Center  for Youth Program Quality's six SEL domains: Emotion Management, Empathy, Teamwork, Responsibility, Initiative and Problem-solving. These are essential skills to be successful in school, college, career and life.

The Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Specialist is responsible for the development and implementation of SEL programming, professional development efforts, curriculum and assessments in partnership with internal teams at Prime Time and key staff at the School District of Palm Beach County. This position requires a flexible thinker who can work collaboratively with various stakeholder groups including out-of-school time practitioners, teachers, parents, students, administrators and other community-based and district staff.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Work with the director of Professional Development to plan, design and lead professional development opportunities for out-of-school time and day school personnel as well as community members and other participants.
  2. Plan with school district, campus teams, and other Prime Time staff for implementation of SEL curriculum and resources.
  3. Engage staff at the pilot sites in all aspects of the Partnerships for Social and Emotional Learning Initiative (PSELI).
  4. Observe and coach OST practitioners and teachers, in partnership with Prime Time quality advisors, the director of Research and the District SEL specialist, on implementation and fidelity of Social and Emotional Learning programming.
  5. Conduct short-term and long-term planning that aligns to department and PSELI project goals and objects, and aligns with Prime Time's strategic plan.
  6. Provide training and technical support to afterschool practitioners and school personnel regarding the implementation of SEL-based activities and curricula.
  7. Facilitate trainings in a variety of modalities to include in-person, hybrid and e-learning formats.
  8. Facilitate Communities of Practice (CoPs)/Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) between teachers and OST practitioners to encourage collaboration, communication, sharing of ideas and continuity of practice as it relates to SEL skill-building.
  9. Interface with district's SEL Specialist and other key staff, CASEL and Weikart coaches and school personnel.
  10. Stay current on research and best practices in the area of social and emotional learning.
  11. Foster collaborative efforts between administrators and practitioners to support continuous improvement through professional development endeavors.
  12. Prepare reports as needed.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.

  1. Extensive knowledge of the content and methodology of SEL-related teaching and learning and adult theory.

Working Conditions and Physical/Mental Requirements:

  • Duties are primarily performed in a general office environment and the community.

Position and Duties Require:

  1. Employee must travel to off-site facilities in visiting agencies throughout the community and participate in off-site meetings. Some of these meetings will take place in the evening and on some weekends.
  2. Ability to communicate effectively in writing, using the English language, with or without the use of auxiliary aids or services.
  3. Cognitive skills in order to perform essential functions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred in Psychology, Education, Counseling. Minimum of three years of experience in the field of social and emotional learning (or related experience), and a minimum of three years of educational experience (classroom teaching, coaching, counseling and/or program implementation) in a variety of settings. Deep knowledge of SEL competencies and adult learning theory required.  Experience in afterschool programming preferred.
